While principle photography for ARXIV was still underway, I composed some music sketches for director Ilya Abulkhanov to consider.

Creating music before there’s a picture to work with can be really useful. A composer can develop a sonic palette and create themes freely without the restrictions of tight edit points to hit and looming deadlines to meet. If, with any luck, this preliminary music generally fits the story and feel of the film, the director and editor have something they can work with as they build the edit.

The sketches I came up with cover a range of approaches to the story- some are very clear themes about despair and longing, some are more atmospheric in nature. Several of the motifs were used in the final score for the film.
